Pedro Morales

Pedro J. Morales was born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 16, 1961. His parents moved to Puerto Rico when he was three months old. His family settled in Trujillo Alto, where they have always lived. He comes from a large family, all plant lovers who have dedicated their lives to agriculture, especially in the ornamental plant field, where Pedro also began as a child.

During his computer programming studies at the University of Puerto Rico, he began working part-time at Jardín Selecto, where he remained permanently for 36 years until June 2015. This is one of the largest garden centers in the San Juan area. From 2017 to 2020, he worked as Director of the Horticulture Department at the Capitol Superintendent's Office. At the same time, he maintained his own bonsai nursery, Futago Bonsai, in Trujillo Alto. He currently continues as Director of the Ornamental Plant Department at the Superintendent's Office.

In 1980, during his first year at the University of Puerto Rico, his Spanish teacher, María Rivera, assigned him a bonsai course for a research project. It was then that Pedro met Hugo Storer, with whom he spent time while preparing his work.

A few years later, he discovered the Puerto Rico Bonsai Club and became a member in 1986. He began taking classes under the supervision of Mr. Adán Montalvo, who was considered the great master of bonsai in Puerto Rico. Pedro continued to seek more information and knowledge and became passionate about bonsai. He founded Futago Bonsai Juyku in 1993, and it is one of the most important bonsai schools in Latin America, having even opened chapters in other countries.

Since then, he has become one of the most talented artists in the tropical world, and his achievements include travels to Latin America, Australia, China, Japan, Korea, India, Spain, Thailand, Indonesia, Slovakia, Germany, and extensive trips to the United States as a demonstrator, lecturer, and exhibitor. He is actively involved in the bonsai movement in Latin American countries and has helped them develop their regional groups. He has been a demonstrator at four WBFF (World Bonsai Friendship Federation) conventions: Florida 1993, Munich 2001, Washington D.C. 2005, and Puerto Rico 2009. He also organized the 2009 WBFF convention in Puerto Rico.

His trees are recognized as great masterpieces of the tropical world; eight of them were selected in the World Bonsai Competition, and one was a runner-up in 2005. In January 2015, one of his smaller bonsai won first prize at the Gafu Ten fair in Japan.

As President of the Puerto Rico Bonsai Federation (FEBOPRI), Pedro had the honor of hosting the BCI FELAB Convention in Puerto Rico in July 2007, the 2009 World Bonsai Convention, and the 2014 International Bonsai Convention.
